Police arrest man with 38,000 fake notes in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: The counterfeit currency wing of CB CID on Monday seized fake currency with a face value of 38,000 from a 25-year-old-man who was travelling from Bihar to Coimbatore.

Rajender was travelling from Kiul in Bihar reached Coimbatore on Sunday morning. On his way, he met six others who were from his native place and got acquainted with them. Four of them got down at Salem and two others got down at Erode.

They handed over a bag to Rajender with 38,000 and told him that they would contact him soon to collect the bag. They also assured him that he could join them soon in their work.

“He came to Coimbatore and stayed on the streets on Sunday. On Monday morning he went to a mobile shop at Gandhi Park and purchased a mobile phone using a fake 1,000 currency note. The shopkeeper had a doubt and informed us,” said Kamlanathan, head constable, CB-CID.

“We asked the shopkeeper to bring him here and arrested him, we seized 38,000 worth counterfeit notes from him,” said Kamalanathan.

Officials said that Rajender was aware that the currency notes were fake. He has been booked under Section 489 (B and C) of the IPC for possessing and using forged or counterfeit currency-notes or bank-notes and has been lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison.
