The Justice S.R Singaravelu-led Private Schools Fee Determination Committee held that Stanes Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School did collect ‘excess fee’ and violated its orders.
In a ruling issued on June 17, the Committee accepted the report filed by the Inspector of Anglo Indian Schools in this issue and instructed the Director of School Education to initiative appropriate action against Stanes school.
Parents Association of Stanes School had filed a complaint with the Committee on September 5, 2014, following which the Inspector of Anglo Indian Schools conducted an inquiry with both parents association and the school management. He submitted a report on November 25, 2014 stating that excess fee was collected during 2014-15. Following representations from the school management, the Committee issued an order on April 22 this year directing the Inspector to consider the school’s request over fixing higher fees. However, the Inspector has not filed a report so far, which the Committee decided not to prevent it from passing orders.
The school management had also questioned the jurisdiction of Committee and had approached the Madras High Court, which, however, sent the matter back to the Committee. After hearing the counsel of the parents association, Malavazhi Udayakumar, and the counsel of the school management, the Committee concluded on March 10 that it had jurisdiction over Stanes school, following which it issued these orders.
Welcoming the ruling, Ajay Raichura, president, Parents Association of Stanes School, expressed the hope that school would refund the excess fee collected.
